Osteonecrosis

Last month, I blogged about some actual physiological and biochemical changes within the digestive system that can lead to osteoporosis. Now, I would like to speak about osteonecrosis.

What is osteonecrosis, you may be wondering?
Well, take a look at what a medical website: Medline Plus has stated. Now, before I go on my rant, pay particular attention to what is conveniently omitted from the "causes" section.

Osteonecrosis is caused when the blood flow to the bone decreases, but why this happens is not always clear. Some known causes of osteonecrosis are:
Steroid Medications
Alcohol use
Injury
Increased pressure to the bone

Risk factors for osteonecrosis are:
Radiation treatment
Chemotherapy
Kidney and organ transplants

Now, here is what is so misleading. There is absolutely no mention of a osteonecrosis line to the osteoporosis medications like: Actonel, Fosamax, Aredia, etc.
There is so much for you to research, my friends. I URGE you, get out there and research your health conditions, etc.
Please do not simply accept that if your body is deficient in some manner, that you are meant to take prescription drugs for the rest of your life. These pharmaceutical companies have a great deal to gain by you purchasing their products. Do you really believe they have your health on their mind or their profit? Only you can truly decide for yourself.

I have made it easy for you to get some information with the following links:

Take a look at this link from the March 2005 USA Today.

Calcium and Osteoporosis

Calcium is a very abundant mineral and found in virtually all of the foods we eat.
Many people are taking calcium supplements as a means to boost their calcium absorption.

However, what many do not realize is that nearly 50% of the calcium in your meals is only absorbed with the proper digestion of protein. So, if you are taking calcium because you have osteoporosis, you had better be aware if your protein digestion is up to snuff.

There are so many patients I see who think that just because they take supplemental calcium that they are all set. Not so. Protein and fat digestion are key players in the success of calcium absorption. In addition, those taking an antacid such as Prilosec, Nexium, etc. are also tampering with essential minerals, like calcium, iron, magnesium, sodium, etc. from being absorbed!

As a Digestive Health Specialist, I am interested in locating your source of stress. Common stresses like: Stiff Joints, Heartburn, Constipation, Anxiety, Diarrhea, High Cholesterol, etc. can be linked to digestive deficiencies.

How Do You Define Health?

You know, this is a topic open for much discussion. So many people think that good health means feeling well. Often times this sentiment takes priority at directing a person's health choices. What I mean is, if we only wait until we have symptoms, we are missing the boat entirely. Symptoms are warning signs, but we shouldn't wait for them before we act.

You see, health is not just the absence of pain. Health is optimal function! It is how well the body deals and copes with structural, emotional, and nutritional stresses. The better suited one is to successfully compete with these stresses, the more healthy this person will be.

There are really 2 ways people choose to look at health:
1. Health is about preventing disease
2. Health is about treating an illness

I can assure you, the more focused you are at preventing disease, the healthier and happier you'll be!

I often tell my patients that you wouldn't brush your teeth only when they hurt, or eat salads only when you're in a good mood. Health is a choice. Every day you have the opportunity to improve your health. What choice will you make today?

We offer digestive services NATIONWIDE!

Too Much Water? Think Again.

Are you someone who ALWAYS has a bottle of water on hand? Did you know it may be harming your kidneys? That's right. Drinking too much water can harm you. Here's the problem. Every time you drink water, your kidneys must filter this water. When you drink excessive amounts of water just because you think you should, your kidneys are working unnecessarily hard to deal with this enormous burden.

Typically, I recommend people drink no more than 80 ounces of water a day. Remember, you get adequate sources of water from fruits as well. If you are a construction worker sweating in the hot sun each day, well this is a different situation. When I recommend 80 ounces per day, that is for the non-physical jobs.

As far as the type of water, make sure it is purified or distilled. Spring water means nothing! So, if the label doesn't say filtered, reverse-osmosis purified, or distilled, you don't want it. So, next time you think you need to down a gallon of water just because, think again.

High Cholesterol REALLY Means...

I don't have to remind you that cholesterol drugs are everywhere. It seems like everyone and their uncle is on some sort of cholesterol lowering medication, also known as statins. I would like to devote some time to explain a different perspective about cholesterol-lowering medications. The problem with this approach is twofold.

First, the body is not a stupid contraption. The human body is the most amazing and brilliant machine imaginable. To assume that the body erroneously makes too much cholesterol is ignorant and misguided. When you understand how the digestive system works, you then begin to see that high cholesterol is a response the body is giving. Often times, heightened cholesterol is because the body NEEDS it. Protein and fat digestion is not properly taking place.

Second, it is never wise to fool Mother Nature. When you analyze the statin drugs, the research points to a strong disruption of Co-enzyme Q-10. This enzyme is essential for muscular health and that my friends, includes the heart. These statin drugs can diminish the amount of CoQ10 production in the body and that creates muscle weakness, not to mention a potential complication for the heart. So, yet again we see medicine being thrown at symptoms, in this case high cholesterol. The cause of high cholesterol is not because you skipped your Lipitor for breakfast. The cause of high cholesterol can absolutely be linked to digestion deficiencies. This is where I could really help you improve your health.

If you are interested in lowering your cholesterol, NATURALLY, then I would love to talk to you. (586) 685-2222.
